Evolution of Color

A new box of crayons might be my favorite thing in the entire world.  The smell, the sharpness of the tips, all of that possibility and color – well, to me it’s just heaven.

When I saw this chart of the evolution of crayon colors well, I just went bonkers for that too.

To me, what is amazing is how consistent their color choices have been.  From very simply to giant boxes of 300 crayons, the colors have all stayed in the same vein.  At least I know that the original colors would have gotten the job done.  I found this graphic and the idea for this post here.

I had a babysitter once who we loved to death.   Weirdly enough, she had albinism, which means that even though she lived 3 doors down she had to carry a black umbrella just to walk to our house.  That weird little tidbit aside, what changed my life was when she taught us to color inside the lines.  First, you outlined the area that was to be whatever color with that color, and then you filled it in.  It was a revelation.

Do you have any crayon-centric favorite memories?

Ooh, I love the chart! There are few greater joys in the world than a fresh box of Crayolas.

I won a coloring contest at Cub Foods in 4th Grade because I was so obsessed about not having any peeking white space between my crayon marks. I won a Cub Foods t-shirt, a fake makeup kit, and the greatest prize of all, a two-foot stuffed kangaroo that shortly lost his ability to stand up and thus spent the majority of his life face down on the floor.

This chart is so cool – thanks for posting it. It’s such a great visual of colors. I remember we used to color a picture with crayon…and then you would go over the picture with a black crayon (we’d go crazy covering the picture with the black crayon!!)…and then you would take scissors and wipe away parts of the black crayon to make a cool, new image!

There is little else that is more evocative to me of my childhood than the smell of new Crayola crayons (Play-Doh is the other). I vividly remember getting a very very special new set when I was about 10 or 11 years old. It was a flat box of *72 colors,* and what made it different from the typical stand-up box of 64 was the addition of several metallic colors at the far-right side of the box. These colors included copper and bronze, I think I remember. I loved that big flat box to death. I often wonder what became of it, suspecting my parents just threw it away when I got older and moved away. Thanks for posting that way-cool chart.
