Flower of the Month – Tulip
It’s springtime and all of the flower stores nearby have been bursting with tulips. There’s a great reason why – they’re bright and colorful and practically scream spring…[more]

Flower of the Month – Hydrangea
Hydrangeas are a great option for a flower that takes up a lot of space and looks good doing it without being too expensive. They also come in lots of interesting color varieties – I like the sort of dusty-colored gold and rose ones – they look great in a vintage-inspired arrangement…[more]

Amy Osaba Floral Design
I’ve seen her work all over the blogs and now that I’ve spent some time checking her out I’m officially in floral love with Amy Osaba…[more]

Flower of the Month – Asiatic Lily
Asiatic Lillies are beautiful for their color and their smell. They come in a vast array of colors – most common is the pink, yellow and orange, although there are many different variations. And they do have a really strong smell (some specific varieties more than others) so you need to be careful that you don’t use too many in one arrangement, lest it become overpowering…[more]

Succulents
This year, why not try your hand at gardening? It need not be too big of a project – I suggest succulents. They are really, truly, impossible to kill…[more]

Flower of the Month – Amaryllis
Amaryllis are a perfect flower for the holiday/winter season. A bright, cheery dash of color and they are so easy to grow, even indoors. Individual bulbs make great gifts, especially if you get them started first! Why not plant them in an unusual container…[more]

Black Flowers
I’m a big fan of black flowers. I think that they can be unexpected and interesting, without being depressing or goth. They’re just so dramatic, and people really never expect to see black flowers. They’re obviously not a true black, instead being dark burgundy or purple, but the look is unmistakable…[more]

Flower of the Month – Garden Rose
My mom hates roses. She hates all cut flowers, but especially roses. It kills me to think that she hates flowers (when I love them) but I can see where she’s coming from. They’re classic, yes, but can be at times unimaginative. We all know that I love peonies and ranunculus for their many-folded petals look, but they can also be expensive…[more]

Fall Florals
A great way to add color and festivity to your fall decorations are mums. They come in a wide variety of seasonally appropriate colors and an arrangement like this will last for weeks if the water is changed regularly. Look for button mums in whatever color you’d like, but make sure that the petals are firm and compact instead of limp…[more]

Flower of the Month – Spider Mum
I might be a little bit biased about this one since I had them at my wedding, but I’ve used them at almost every event I’ve done since so I think that it’s ok. What I like about spider mums is their gorgeous shape. They add a bit of organic thrill to whatever arrangement they are placed with, their wild petals striking out in all directions. I believe that they are a member of the chrysanthemum family, and you can really tell by looking at them…[more]

Flower of the Month – Kangaroo Paw
This colorful, tall and somewhat exotic flower is incredibly versatile. Its flowers come in a range of colors, from yellow with dark red stems to green flowers with red stems and even black. The little bells are said to be reminiscent of a certain animal – hence the name…[more]

DIY Carnation Centerpiece
Carnations get a bad rap. So often the flower choice of a forgetful boyfriend at 8pm on Valentine’s day, they’re often dismissed as being cheap and ugly. My mother abhors them. I tend to think that they have a lot of potential…[more]

Flower of the Month – Celosia (Cockscomb)
I’ve been in love with this flower ever since I saw it in an art gallery in Vancouver a few years ago. I couldn’t believe that it was so weird – it looked almost exactly like brain coral! A friend of mine bought me a plant…[more]

Inspiring Florals
If you live in the San Diego are and are looking for a florist for a wedding or event, you need to check out Modern Bouquet.
Their floral designs are always inspiring to me. They use color really well, and design some interesting arrangements that could only come from years of experience in the field…[more]

Flower of the Month – Dahlias
That’s two for this month, but I can’t help but be thinking about them. I like the amazing range of colors that dahlias come in especially. They’re really bright and perky. I used some black ones for a friend’s wedding, and they were just divine – really gave the arrangements some depth and character. I also like the density of the petals – I really think that it gives these blooms some major personality…[more]

Wedding Flowers
I love weddings. And I have a hard time saying no when someone asks me to do something for theirs (I’ll admit, I volunteer as well). This past weekend, I was responsible for doing all of the flowers for a friend’s wedding. I’ve done them before, for my own and for another friend’s, but this one was a big project…[more]

Flower of the Month – Craspedia (Billie Balls)
I love how relentlessly cheery they are!
The best part is that they dry out rather well so you won’t have to worry about your bouquet melting, and you can keep it with you forever! I love the feel of a bouquet of them altogether, or interspersed with a bunch of different flowers for a quirky look…[more]

Flower Market
I was in Seattle over the weekend (sorry for the lack of posts!) and of course I went to the Pike’s Market at least twice. What struck me most (especially living out in the desert) was the flowers. There were so many of them! And they were beautiful. It’s peony season up there so you saw more peonies than you can even believe. Sweet pea was also in season, and between the two the place smelled like heaven…[more]

Flower of the Month – Peony!
These are one of my favorite flowers to be sure. I love the density of their petals, and the really great texture that it produces. I also love the sweet smell, and the fact that they can’t open on their own, and need ants to open those petals for them. I think that they are great for any occasion, and think they would be especially nice in an early summer wedding…[more]

Wedding Flowers
I’m a big fan of flowers, and I wanted to have tons of them at the wedding. When looking into the price of flowers, however, I was stunned! They do make a huge visual impact, but at what cost? You just end up throwing them away at the end anyway. I got around the problem somewhat by having the wedding in a family friend’s backyard. She’s a serious gardener, and their house is surrounded by 100+ year old cottonwood trees, so the setting was perfect…[more]

Orchids
I love the way that orchids look, and all of the infinite variations. What also impresses me is the patience necessary to nurture these past their first bloom. I’m terrible with flowers, but I bought this over Easter, and it’s still alive, so hopefully that shall continue…[more]

Ranunculus Photoshoot
I was driving from Arizona to Colorado and did my requisite stop at Trader Joe’s along the way for a case of two buck chuck. They cunningly put their floral section right inside the door, and I was instantly struck by the color of these ranunculus. It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t terribly logical but I decided that they could survive the 10 hour trip back with me in the car…[more]

April Flowers – Anemone
I really love spring flowers that have bright, open multicolor blooms. That’s part of the reason that I’m so into ranunculus, but there are some other choices that I think fit the bill. Anemone is one of them. I love the bright colors and the cheeriness that these flowers provide…[more]

Pretty Spring Collages
I’m in a spring mood lately, so I did a few flower-themed collages to celebrate the season. I also pre-framed them because frankly, I hate when I buy prints and they are some weird size and it’s impossible to buy a frame to fit them…[more]

Flower of the Month – Ranunculus
I know that it’s still in the cold clutches of winter for a lot of you out there, and I don’t mean to rub it in, but it’s been in the high 80’s here all week. My poor cold-climate conditioned body has no idea what to do! However, it does mean that flowers bloom early here and it’s time for me to start thinking about flowers…[more]
